SpaceXSI Builds Data Bot for Teams
  • •SpaceXSI built Data Bot, a Grok Bot Team Bot that lets employees query its warehouse and run analyses.
  • •Shared skills cover metrics, experiments, charts, dashboards and data engineering; managers approve memory additions before sharing.
  • •SpaceXSI estimates the bot handled about 70 hours of data science work last week, while staff retain complex analyses.

SpaceXSI says its data science team built Data Bot, a Team Bot in Grok Bot, so employees can query the company warehouse, run analyses and receive answers shaped by the data team's methods. The team began exploring AI agents a few months ago because its small staff could not answer every question in a fast-growing company. Data Bot can also join Slack channels, where it answers questions and contributes to ongoing work.

The team teaches Data Bot through shared skills covering business metrics, experiments, charts and dashboards, and data engineering. The skills define metrics such as active users and revenue, identify source tables and query logic, and guide investigations into changes by segment or region, including checks for holidays or logging changes. Experiment guidance includes A/B test setup, power analyses, exposure balance, sample bias, rollout planning, investigating unexpected results and writing readouts after experiments reach power. Other skills cover chart choices, team styles, Databricks or Hex dashboards, dbt models, pipeline alerts and analytics event logging.

Data Bot also has shared memory for knowledge gained during use, such as who owns a pipeline or whether a past metric drop coincided with a regional holiday. Managers review proposed memory additions and approve or reject them before they are shared with users. Product managers can ask questions in Grok Bot, follow up on answers and receive findings in preferred formats, such as a concise headline with a chart. SpaceXSI PM Kevin Niparko says he can investigate questions in minutes that might previously have required opening a dashboard, starting an analysis in Cursor or asking a data scientist.

Marketing staff use Data Bot to connect campaign activity with customer behavior in the warehouse. Lifecycle marketer Jon Brenner can provide a Braze campaign ID and ask whether recipients who clicked later used a feature. For the launch of The X Subscription, he asked how many email recipients switched plans, a question Braze's built-in conversion metric could not answer. Revenue growth director Katy Abbaszadeh uses the bot to measure events' contribution to sales pipelines, monitor weekly progress against targets, investigate slowdowns and create charts for presentations.

For larger requests, Data Bot can plan an analysis, query the warehouse, examine possible explanations and produce a written report with charts or a Hex dashboard. Teams can also assign it scheduled reporting in Slack channels, where it posts weekly metric updates and responds to follow-up questions or investigates unexpected changes. SpaceXSI estimates that Data Bot handled about 70 hours of work last week that otherwise would have gone to the data science team. The team says it continues to handle complex analyses requiring more judgment and is identifying where the bot needs further guidance.
