Tencent Pitches WorkBuddy for Global Growth
- •Tencent showcased WorkBuddy as a central part of its infrastructure strategy at its 2026 Shenzhen summit.
- •WorkBuddy operates in more than 21 markets and combines ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, Hy and DeepSeek.
- •Jade Ding said embedded guardrails address security, while FDEs help connect company data systems to AI.
At Tencent’s 2026 Global Digital Infrastructure Summit in Shenzhen, WorkBuddy was presented as a central part of the company’s infrastructure strategy. Tencent launched the enterprise productivity AI agent in March, and says it has become China’s most widely used AI productivity tool. The platform aims to move traditional workflows to AI-coordinated tasks to improve enterprise productivity.
WorkBuddy is live in more than 21 markets, including Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Southeast Asia, according to Jade Ding, the product’s Head of Overseas. Ding said it targets practical workplace tasks such as data analysis and coding. She described the service as integrating ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, Hy and DeepSeek, and said it offers these models together with multi-model agent solutions.
Ding said adoption depends partly on companies’ internal data infrastructure and their ability to connect legacy systems to AI-native systems. She identified Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) as a growing role: they assess how well a company’s existing data systems can connect and what fixes may be needed. Some organizations can connect with little repair work, she said, while others must do more. Ding described a common enterprise adoption path in which technical staff try a technology, assess whether it improves productivity, and then promote it to a team and potentially the wider organization.
Tencent’s share price has declined steadily this year, while the article says the company, like other major Chinese firms, faces limited compute availability and remains partly reliant on US GPU providers, including NVIDIA and Oracle. The article notes these factors may concern investors. It also reports that enterprise users have raised security concerns about AI systems, particularly agentic AI, after high-profile cases of agents breaking into external websites in recent weeks. Ding said WorkBuddy builds guardrails into its product functions and architecture.
Ding said WorkBuddy can process large volumes of repetitive documents, files and information, select models and tools based on a user’s prompt, intent and context, and deliver a completed result. She added that delivery can be continually adjusted based on user habits, requirements and memory of previous task solutions. The article characterizes WorkBuddy as Tencent’s route to global expansion, offering users the option to switch from US models for some tasks and try open-weight Chinese alternatives.
