Tokyo Metro to Deploy AI Support System
- •Tokyo Metro announced an AI image-recognition driver assistance system for maintenance vehicles.
- •Cameras will scan about 50 meters ahead and warn drivers of obstacles or track-switch conditions on screen and by sound.
- •The portable system will be shared across 117 work vehicles, with orders planned during fiscal 2026 and operations by the end of fiscal 2027.
Tokyo Metro announced on October 27, 2026, that it will introduce Point AI, a driver assistance system using cameras and AI image recognition. The system is part of the company's plan to advance railway operations through new technology and digital transformation.
Cameras installed on vehicles used for nighttime track maintenance will capture the route about 50 meters ahead. The AI will recognize obstacles and equipment conditions, then alert drivers on a display and by sound if a track switch is not set for the direction of travel or the vehicle approaches an obstacle.
Tokyo Metro aims to improve the safety and reliability of nighttime track maintenance and reduce the burden of drivers' checks. The portable system can be shared among the company's 117 maintenance vehicles; Tokyo Metro says sharing it can keep deployment costs down. The company plans to place orders during fiscal 2026 and begin operations by the end of fiscal 2027.
