The U.S. Commerce Department authorized Anthropic to provide access to its Claude Mythos 5 AI model to selected trusted partners. This directive follows a June 12 government order that previously forced Anthropic to suspend its most advanced models, including Mythos 5 and Fable 5, due to concerns regarding potential use by military intelligence entities in countries such as China and Russia. According to a letter from U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the company has since worked with federal officials to mitigate security risks.

More than 100 institutions and companies, including numerous Fortune 500 firms, are now permitted to utilize Mythos 5. The new ruling removes the requirement for an export license for these approved entities and their foreign national employees, as well as for foreign nationals employed directly by Anthropic. However, strict limitations persist for organizations not included on the approved list. While the current directive focuses on Mythos 5, the status of the Fable 5 model remains unresolved, though reports suggest the government is moving toward authorizing its release on an unspecified timeline.

This policy shift follows a period of tension between the IPO-bound company and the U.S. government. Anthropic previously declined to allow the U.S. military to use its technology for autonomous weapons systems or domestic surveillance, which resulted in the company being placed on a national security blacklist earlier this year. A Commerce Department spokesperson stated that these developments reflect efforts to maintain U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence while simultaneously upholding national security protocols.
