Yum Brands Expands AI Across Restaurants
  • •Yum Brands says enterprise AI use rose 40% as it shifts from daily assistance to organizational capabilities
  • •Bite Kitchen Display System brought 8% faster drive-thrus and 12% fewer refunds at KFC restaurants
  • •Voice AI runs in more than 900 Taco Bell drive-thrus, with expansion past 1,500 projected by end of 2026

Yum Brands said AI is becoming central to its business strategy as it reshapes the company after selling and divesting Pizza Hut. On a Tuesday earnings call, executives reported sales across Taco Bell, KFC and its other brands rose 3% in Q3 2026. CFO Ranjith Roy said the company expects AI to be “transformative to the business” and estimated enterprise AI use had increased 40%, shifting from help with daily tasks toward embedding AI in organizational capabilities.

Executives highlighted Byte by Yum, the company’s software-as-a-service platform of AI tools for customers, operations and employees. Yum rolled out its Bite Kitchen Display System, a kitchen management tool, to KFC restaurants. Roy said it has made drive-thru service 8% faster, cut refunds by 12% and reduced delivery drivers’ wait times. Yum plans to keep developing the platform and other AI capabilities to personalize customer experiences. Roy said Byte by Yum improves consumer experiences, simplifies operations and provides more value to franchise partners.

Yum has spent the past few years building its AI strategy. In 2025, it expanded AI tools to more restaurants, worked with AWS, Microsoft and Nvidia on voice AI agents, and developed its proprietary platform with a greater focus on AI. More than 900 Taco Bell restaurants now use voice AI in drive-thrus; Roy projected that number would exceed 1,500 by the end of 2026. He said Taco Bell saw a 6% improvement in overall drive-thru satisfaction and about 1.5% sales uplift. Yum also uses digital tools and AI for personalized customer experiences and marketing. Roy cited Byte Coach, a tool intended to help general managers and leaders identify and fix restaurant-level issues. The company’s AI pipeline is moving from testing to adoption and then scaling, with the stated aim of measurable improvements in restaurant operations, customer experiences and franchisee economics.
